On Friday, September 7, Penn State Scranton hosted their annual Joe Simoncelli Relay. The relay follows a slightly different format than a normal meet as each team breaks off into teams of two and each runner runs a 5K. The first runner runs a 3K loop then hands off a baton off to their partner who then runs the 3K loop. The next handoff consists of the first runner running a 2K loop and their teammate runs the final 2K loop to the finish.
The women’s race started out tight through the first 3K loop handoff but Penn State Schuylkill junior, Alexis Luna and sophomore, Carly Teashenko pulled away from the pack claiming the top spot and individual team first place medals with a combined time of 48:25. Penn State Scranton senior, Cheyenne Tussel and freshman, Caitlyn Powell put Scranton into the mix locking up second place individual team medals with a combined time of 56:56. Schuylkill’s second team came in third place securing the overall team win.
The men’s race also started out tight, but Penn State Schuylkill quickly took control of the race sweeping the relay as Willie Streisel and Adam Bahrey taking the top spot and individual team first place medals with a combined time of 36:15 and Omar Walker and Matt Derr taking the individual team second place medals with a combined time of 37:18. Schuylkill’s other two men’s teams also took third and fourth place with Penn State Scranton senior, Kyle Franceski and sophomore, Jack Meyer take fifth place with a combined time of 42:54. Penn State Schuylkill swept the overall team awards from the host team Penn State Scranton.
